About SLLDC
Background
The Colombo District Low- Lying Areas Development Board was established in 1968 by Act No. 15 of 1968 with the twin objectives of
- To reclaim and develop marshy and low – lying areas declared under Section 2 of the Act No. 15 of 1968.
- To retain the custody, management and control of such vested lands
This was amended by Law No. 27 of 1976 strengthening the organization with the power to sell such reclaimed lands.
In 1979, the activities of the organisation which had been limited to the Colombo District since its inception, extended beyond Colombo District extending the benefits of planned reclamation to the whole island.
The organisation was re-designated as “Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation” with the amending Act No. 52 of 1982 to the Colombo District (Low Lying Areas) Development Board Act No. 15 of 1968, and the scope of activities was extended to include construction work and consultancy services in the field of engineering.
As per the recent amendment to the Act, by Act No.35 of 2006 the Corporation will be empowered to take legal action against unauthorised activities and pollution of water bodies. The penal provisions incorporated under Sections 20C & 22A.
The main objectives and powers of the Corporation are specified in section 8 and 9 of Act No. 15 of 1968 and as amended by Law No. 27 of 1976, Act No. 52 of 1982 and Act No. 35 of 2006.–
Mission
- To reclaim and develop every development area declared by order under section2 of the amendment to the SLLDC Act No. 15 of 1968.
- To ensure flood free habitat and improving the environment by rehabilitating creating and maintaining polluted free inland water bodies
- To undertake consultancy work on drainage design, land filling and other related areas and establishing a Bench Mark of high standard for the industry.
- To improve and maintain the quality of our services and add value to our customers in particular and to the community at large.
